Surfside Bites & Brew

The restaurant inside the Piha Surf Club. Year-round, seven days, with a view of the south end of the beach and the best burger in the village.

Great vibes and views.

About

Surfside Bites & Brew is the restaurant operating within the Piha Surf Life Saving Club building at the south end of the beach, looking out across the surf toward Lion Rock. Worth knowing how this works structurally: the Surf Club is the institution and the venue, and Surfside is the restaurant that runs from inside it. The two have different operating rhythms — the Surf Club's lifeguard patrols and members' bar are seasonal; Surfside is year-round, seven days a week. In a village where seasonal hours are the norm, that reliability matters.

The food is straightforward and good. The burger and fries are the order most worth coming for, and locals will tell you the same. The fish and chips are part of the running argument about who in the village does them best — Surfside is one of the four contenders and the case for them is the size of the portion, the freshness of the fish, and the setting that makes a beach lunch into something more than fuel.

The setting does most of the rest of the work. You're a few steps from the south end of the beach, the Tasman is doing its thing through the windows, and you've earned the meal whether you've come off a surf, a swim, a walk, or just the drive out from the city. The deck is the spot in summer; the inside booths are the spot in winter.
